How To Buy Sustainable Beauty Products

Love buying our skincare because you know it’s ethically, environmentally and socially responsible? We’ve put together five tips for finding sustainable beauty products.

Tip 1: Choose ingredients you understand

Would you eat it? Although we don’t mean this literally, your skin is the body’s largest organ and what you put on it gets absorbed. Read the label closely and examine the ingredients. If there are names that aren’t familiar, look them up online on a credible cosmetics ingredients database.

Tip 2: While you’re there, check for plastics

Plastic microbeads find their way into scrubs, body washes, and shampoos and end up washed down the drain into the ocean. This plastic pollution is completely unnecessarily because there are plenty of biodegradable alternatives out there, like our jojoba wax spheres in our Gentle Facial Exfoliant or rosehip seed powder in our Exfoliating Body Balm.

Check the ingredients list for polyethylene (PE) or polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polymethlyl methacrylate (PMMA) or nylon.

Tip 3: Are the products are certified natural/organic?

If a product is certified natural or organic, it probably has to comply with soft manufacturing processes and environmentally friendly practises.For example the NATRUE stamp of approval means products stand by the following codes:

• Natural and organic ingreidents
• Soft manufacturing processes
• Environmentally friendly practises
• No animal testing
• No synthetic fragrances and colours
• No genetically modified ingreidents
• No petroleum derived products
• No silicone oils and derivates

Tip 4: Is it cruelty-free?

Tip 5: Choose nontoxic, recyclable packaging

Ensuring our ingredients and packaging are sustainably sourced is very important to us. Packaging is recyclable and uses sustainable FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified paper and board and biodegradable, non-bio-accumulating vegetable-based bio-inks and varnishes. We comply with Australia’s Illegal Logging Prohibition Act, which requires confirmation that timber products used in the supply chain are from ethical sources and haven’t been obtained from illegal logging. With full traceability over every ingredient, we can be confident they too are from sustainable sources.
